A guide to hot pools in Taupō

Locals have long enjoyed the geothermal wonders of Taupō, from gentle geothermal walkways to overnight hikes throughout majestic volcanic landscapes. Still, the real gem is experiencing Taupō's volcanic energy by soaking in its warm healing waters at one of the geothermal hot pools. The healing properties of the mineral waters have been known by local Māori for hundreds of years, while visitors have flocked here for centuries to enjoy its famous relaxation and medicinal benefits.

The Taupō region is home to several natural and commercial hot pools, each offering a different experience, providing the perfect post-adventure therapy.

Otumuheke Stream

Wairakei Terraces & Thermal Health Spa

AC Baths & Thermal Hot Pools

Tokaanu Thermal Pools

Taupō Debretts Hot Springs

Tūrangi Turtle Pools

Otumuheke Stream, Spa Thermal Park

Warm up in the waters of Taupō town's beautiful natural hot spot, Otumuheke Stream at Spa Thermal Park. Warm geothermal waters from the Otumuheke Stream flow gently into the Waikato River, providing a hot spot where bathers can relax in healing mineral water.

Soak under a waterfall or in the natural rock pools whilst taking in the stunning views of the deep green, crystal-clear waters of the mighty Waikato River, New Zealand’s longest river. The Otumuheke Stream area has had a significant upgrade in 2018 including new changing rooms, lockers and toilets, river edge lounging platforms, a hot spring seating area and storyboards explaining the historic and cultural significance of this unique area.

Wairakei Terraces & Thermal Health Spa

Experience the healing nature of the region’s waters at Wairakei Terraces & Thermal Health Spa, an adults-only geothermal resort situated below magnificent silica terraces just north of Taupō town. Silica-enriched water cascades over the terraces from a geyser above, depositing large amounts of silica to form these amazing terraces.

Bathe at the bottom of the terraces and beneath a waterfall in a series of pools that vary in temperature. The water is naturally rich in minerals and striking in colour. Feel relaxed amongst rising steam, melodic birdsong and the soothing sounds of cascading water and a gushing geyser. Add on a therapeutic massage by appointment and rejuvenate and balance your body and mind.

AC Baths & Thermal Hot Pools

Bath in the large outdoor leisure pool with two toddler areas, exercise in one of the 25-metre lane pools, teach your children to swim in an indoor learn to swim pool, have some fun on two large enclosed hydroslides and rope swing, or relax within a private thermal mineral pool, take a sauna or warm up with coffee and cake at the café. All the pools are thermally heated using natural hot water.

Past studies describe dog owners’ “vicarious pleasure (that) demonstrates how dog walking can produce a shared happiness.” A common thread between all dog parents is seeing their dog’s reaction when they ask the rhetorical question, “Do you wanna go for a walk?”

But we don’t need a study to understand why dogs are man’s best friend.

Dogs add so much to our daily lives with their unconditional love, infinite loyalty, and infectious joy.

Imagine the joy we could add to theirs when we take them on holiday.
Orakei Korako Cave & Geothermal Park

With these 5 autumn walking tracks in one of the most dog-friendly towns, you and your pup will both be excited to get out the door!

1. Rangatira Point Track

We mentioned the Rangatira Track in our story, but we didn’t showcase the best part!

This lakeside walk is a hidden gem for you and your fur friend.

For the energetic pups (anyone who has a collie or huskie), begin at the first carpark off Acacia Bay Road for a 1.5 km walk one-way. If your pet is a senior angel, there’s two other carparks with shorter walking distances.

Wander together through native bush with the lake right at their paws. For the dogs who can’t stay out of the water, this is heaven on earth with small beaches to swim in. Launch your paddleboard or kayak and voyage together to the Ngatoroirangi Mine Bay Māori Rock Carvings (a few minutes past Whakamoenga Point).

Once you get to the boat ramp, stroll an extra 30 minutes to Whakamoenga Point. The flat volcanic rocks formed for a day of enjoying the lake views and bounding from the rocks into Lake Taupō.

What to expect:

30 minutes to 1.5-hour return

Difficulty: Easy

No public facilities

Three carparks

2. Opepe Scenic & Historic Reserve Walk

The Opepe Scenic & Historic Reserve Walk is a relatively flat loop just 10 minutes outside Taupō town. It may look like an ordinary walk through tōtara, miro, mataī and kahikatea forest.

But within the lush greenery are living pieces of the historic Opepe settlement.

Amble through a mature forest that survived centuries of storms and volcanic eruptions on the Northern Track (1.5 km). On the opposite side of SH5, the Southern loop (3km) contains remnants of rich history. Along the trail, your duo will discover pieces of the old settlement- tōtara fencing, a watering site, and a historic sawpit.

Or venture through both loops for a long morning walk then fuel back up for lunch at Replete Café & Store or any of the other dog-friendly cafes in Taupō town. For an après-hike adventure, blaze the bike trails with your trusty trail dog at Craters MTB Park or take an Ernest Kemp cruise with your best fur friend on board to the Ngatoroirangi Mine Bay Māori Rock Carvings.

What to expect:

30-45 minutes or 1-1.5 hours return

Difficulty: Easy

No public facilities (bring water for you and your pup)

Carpark access

3. Waipahihi Botanical Reserve

Spring is stunning.

But autumn at the gardens cannot be missed with its flourishing trees and colors, prime picnic spots, and the sweeping views of Lake Taupō, the mountains, and Taupō town below.

The 35 hectares of rata, flax, kauri, and hebe bring this autumn walk to life and are a favorite for local dog parents. You pass by other dog moms on walkways, themed with flowers and plants, offering an afternoon for you and your dog to get lost together in this oasis.

With lunch spots throughout the gardens with scenic views, you and your pup are spoilt for choice of picnic tables, open reserves and scenic views. Your picnic date is made easy with packed lunch options from Baked with Love or Bodyfuel Café.

Between the beautiful flora, the endless walking loops, and the panoramic views, we don’t know who will be happier!

What to expect:

Various walking times

Difficulty: Easy

Public facilities available

Carpark access from the gate entrance

Picnic tables and seating

4. Pukawa Bay Walks

If you haven’t gotten a chance to visit the south side of the lake, you’re missing out!

Get away from the hustle and bustle and venture to the secluded holiday havens of Omori and Pukawa.

The Pukuawa Bay Loop Track is a favorite for dog parents in the area. The short inclines are worth the glorious views eastward across Lake Taupō and the remote countryside. Under the cover of native rimu, mataī and tōtara trees is where you and your fur friend will treasure the cozy beginnings of autumn.

Your best walking buddy begging for more?

In Pukawa village, Pukawa to Omori Track begins through bush right along the lake’s edge. Your pup won't know where to inspect and sniff between the pond, Omori Reserve, and the beach.

Continue through the Omori Stream to Omori for a quick caffeine break for you and a water break for your fur friend, returning via the same track.

What to expect:

45-minute loop or 1.2 hr one way

Difficulty: Easy

Public facilities at Omori Reserve

Parking access

5. Oruatua Walk

Does your dog love the water?

If you’re close to the Turangi area, you won’t want to miss this lakeside hidden gem.

At the mouth of the Tauranga-Taupō River, an easy walking loop to explore the river, native bush reserves, and stunning Lake Taupō views, is waiting for his pawprints.

The track begins with native bush and forest overhead before opening up your dog’s dream of a beach, for them to play and just be the joyful dogs that they are.

It's the perfect mix of bush, wetland, and lakeside beach on this short walk for you and your best friend.

What to expect:

30-50 minutes

Difficulty: Easy

No public facilities

Parking Access (follow the unpaved road from Kapua Street to the lakeside clearing)

Please note to keep your pup on a lead at all times while enjoying these walks together.

I once read this quote that completely changed how I view my dog and her companionship.

“Dogs might be in just a small part of our lives. But to them, we are their whole life.”

So why not share the best life with them on your next Taupō holiday.

New Zealand family travel: The treasures of Taupō

by Brook Sabin for Stuff.co.nz

"What are we doing today?" I'm convinced kids think their parents have magical powers - able to conjure up an exciting holiday adventure at a moment's notice.

This story has been republished with permission from the author.

One of the biggest challenges is finding activities that are just as much fun for adults, as they are for kids - after all, it's your holiday too.

We have found a solution. Most people drive straight past Taupō - perhaps stopping to watch the sheer force on display at Huka Falls. But there is much more to this region if you just look a little closer.

Watch the video here.

The secret volcano valley

Thirty minutes outside Taupō is a geothermal wonderland most of us have never heard of - Orakei Korako. The area is known as The Hidden Valley, but don't let the remoteness fool you; this is one of the most active geothermal regions in the country.
Orakei Korako is a stunning geothermal wonderland most have never heard of.

When you first arrive, you need to board a boat to cross the Waikato River to reach the geothermal field. What greets you on the other side is the biggest silica terraces anywhere in the world - giving a glimpse into what the Pink and White Terraces would have once looked like.

From there, you follow a snaking boardwalk up through the valley, passing more than 20 geysers, hot springs and mud pools. There's even a rare geothermal cave to explore; one of only two known to exist in the world.
Orakei Korako gives a glimpse into what the Pink and White Terraces once looked like.

The park is continually exploding, gushing and bubbling. The Earth here is angry, and it's a privilege to be able to witness its constant tantrums.

Price: $15 for kids, and $39 for adults. Family pass - 2 adults and up to 6 children is $98. You can even bring your dog.

Raging rapids

One of the best free attractions in Taupō puts on a show at 90,000 litres a second, several times a day.
The release of the Aratiatia Dam turns the gorge into a raging river within five minutes.

The Aratiatia Dam, just north of the city, is the closest most will ever come to witnessing a flash flood. After a series of loud warning sirens, the dam opens, and in a matter of minutes, a trickling stream down a narrow gorge becomes a raging torrent.

Price: Free. Water releases happen at 10am, 12pm, 2pm (plus 4pm in summer).

White water jet

Another great way to experience the Aratiatia Rapids is by jet boating to the base of them. The Rapid Jets trip is unlike any other in New Zealand; it's a little like white water rafting in a jet boat.
Rapids Jet offers the only white water jet boat trip in the country.

You get all the usual spins and close shaves you'd expect in a jet boat, as well as thundering through roaring white water, getting some serious air as you hurtle down the river.

Price: $75 for children, $129 per adult - with discounts for booking as a family. Suitable for children as young as five.

Interactive wonderland

If you or the kids are a fan of the hit TV show Lego Masters, you'll want to stop at Mind Junction. This adventure centre for kids has the largest permanent lego display in New Zealand - alongside lots of other activities like a giant outdoor maze, radio control boats and a fully functioning flight simulator.
Mind Junction is fun for young and old.

The Discovery Centre is a highlight - it's accessed by a pitch-black 'sensory tunnel' - then out you pop in a room full of experiments. Kids will learn about space, sound, light and Earth while playing with interactive displays.

Price: Mind Junction charges per activity, or purchase a VIP Pass for $35 - which gives access to most areas.

Heat up

Taupō DeBretts Hot Springs are designed for kids and adults alike. Children can spend the day at the hot water playground, or racing up and down the hydro-slides, while parents relax in the nearby thermal pools.

This popular complex can be crowded during holidays, but off-peak, it's a great place to unwind while the kids burn off their energy.

Price: Family day passes start from $79.

Geothermal safari

The best Segway trip in the country involves an off-road safari.

An off-road Segway safari ventures down a valley to a hidden geothermal stream.

After a quick training session, the specially designed Segways are ready to be unleashed on a course through the forest, that includes hills, dips, bumps and slopes. The tour even visits a hidden geothermal stream - wrapped in a mythical valley of steam.

Price: Tours with Pure Kiwi Adventures start from $75.

Waka in the sky

New Zealand's largest gondola has just opened at Whakapapa - on the slopes of Mount Ruapehu. The Sky Waka takes you 1.8 kilometres up into the clouds - passing frozen waterfalls, ancient lava flows, snow-covered valleys and ends the journey at the highest restaurant in New Zealand, overlooking the vast expanse of the Tongariro National Park. You can even see out to Mount Taranaki on a clear day.
The Whakapapa Sky Waka leads to the highest cafe in New Zealand.

Snow sledding is also a popular activity for kids that need an easy introduction to snow - adults can even race their children down, before getting on a specially-designed sled lift to return to the top of the course.
Sledding at Whakapapa is a popular activity for kids who don't have the confidence to ski.

Price: A family pass up the Sky Waka costs $135.

The lake's hidden gem

One of the country's most magnificent Māori Rock Carvings is tucked away on Lake Taupō - only accessible by boat.
Magnificent Māori art is hidden on Lake Taupō.

In the 1970s, wearing just speedos and safety glasses, four artists marked out a giant artwork to create a permanent connection between the region's ancestors, and the land. It took four years of painstaking work to carve out the enormous face.

The trail is broken up into three key sections: Waihaha, Kawakawa and Whakaipo and is rideable all year round due to the region's unique free draining volcanic pumice soil. The Great Lake Trail is part of the Nga Haerenga - The New Zealand Cycle Trails network.

Where to stay

For the best experience, you can base yourself in Kinloch, a picturesque village set on a quiet bay right at the top of Lake Taupō, and ride in a west-to-east direction starting at Waihaha, ending at W2K.

Kinloch is just 20 minutes northwest of Taupō town and makes for simple logistics with various Airbnb options or a handful of bike-friendly commercial B&Bs nearby. Coordinating logistics is easy from here, with several shuttles and guides operating out of Kinloch. By mountain bike or foot, the bush-clad trail offers excellent nature-watching, including native birds and even the odd wild pig or deer. Here we have highlighted the Great Lake Trails over three days on bike, basing yourself in Kinloch.

Day one - Waihaha Section

The Waihaha section (30km) is the most remote, so be prepared for an early start. It’s 40 minutes’ drive or shuttle from Kinloch and is the longest of the three sections.
The Waihaha River Bridge, Waihaha Section of the Great Lake Trails

The ride starts from the Waihaha River Bridge and has been built with flowing corners, fun downhills, and some short switchback climbs to keep you honest, but your efforts will be rewarded with postcard-worthy lookouts along the way. Towering volcanic rock cliffs, spectacular views and a waterfall hidden deep in the Waihaha Valley are among some of the highlights on this section of the trail.
Tieke Waterfall, Waihaha Section of the Great Lake Trails

The final part of the ride drops you down past the sacred Kotukutuku Falls to the remote aquamarine waters of Waihora beach. This is the perfect spot for a swim as you wait for your water taxi to pick you up. It is important to plan ahead as the remote nature of this section requires both a shuttle to the start, and a water taxi from Waihora Bay back to Kinloch.

Waihora Bay back to Kinloch - water taxi transfer

Pack plenty of food and water, and take your time to enjoy all the stunning sights and sounds along the way. Be sure to stop at Echo Rock, where you could be tricked into thinking you’re underneath a waterfall.

Day two - Kawakawa section and Whakaipo Section

Start day two with a shuttle out to the start of the 19.5km Kawakawa section, just a short 20-minute journey from Kinloch. The first 10km of the trail is a nice gradual downhill that takes you through stunning native wetlands before dropping you into the secluded Kawakawa Bay.
Kawakawa Bay, Kawakawa Section of the Great Lake Trails

This is a great place to stop for morning tea or lunch, and during summer is the perfect place for a swim. You can also camp here. For those who would prefer an easy ride (10.25km), you can book Venture Beyond - powered by Taxicat back to Kinloch from Kawakawa Bay.

If you’re keen to carry on, a 3km climb up onto the Te Kauwae headland is rewarded with sweeping views of the lake and western bays before you begin the fast-flowing descent to Kinloch.

The Whakaipo section (21km) starts from Kinloch and loops over the eastern peninsula of Whangamata Bay and into Whakaipo Bay. Again, this section has two distance options.
Whakaipo Section of the Great Lake Trails

The simple loop is a gentle grade 2-3, 13km in length, with a few scenic stops along the route. The headland loop adds on an additional 9.5km and is a little more physical than the main route. The ducking and diving through the trees as the trail twists lengthens the route, but you will find yourself out on the edge of the peninsula with stunning vistas over Lake Taupō.
Whakaipo Section of the Great Lake Trails

Before setting out, be sure to organise your transport back to Kinloch from Whakaipo Bay. There is road access into the bay, so dropping a vehicle, there is an option or book a shuttle to pick you up. The other option is booking a water taxi to collect you off the shores of the bay and jet you back around to Kinloch.

All sections of the Great Lake Trail are ridable in both directions, so you can choose to tackle them however you choose. Shuttle services and tour operators are available to provide transport links, guiding services and package tours.

When you’re wanting to play a different game, Taupō is the place to be. Here, you’ll find every reason to forget your everyday as you swing into a different rhythm set to the crisp sound of a well-struck long iron.

It’s not about cutting yourself off completely. It’s about making a mindful choice to override the constant noise and savour the moments. Yes, you can switch off your phone — not just for the game, but for the entire weekend.

Ready to toggle to Taupō? Let us show you how you can step away, switch off and let it all soak in.

Golf is meant to be about focus and feeling every shot, but the group chat always seems to cut through the wrong moment. Golf in Taupō is the perfect excuse to leave those messages on read, ditch the device and just play.

Tee off without the noise, just you, the fairways, the elements, and maybe a deer or two passing by in the rough. Plenty of open tee slots down here. You’re up, play when you’re ready.

Play a round at Wairakei Golf + Sanctuary, where the only alerts are native birdsong. Or take on The Kinloch Club, a course designed to demand full concentration, where every shot deserves your full attention.
Play at your own pace, enjoy the contours of the fairways and let the round unfold without rush — soak in the solitude. Lose your ball and you might find yourself. If your default mode is getting a cart, try walking for a change, the slower pace might do wonders for your golf!

Wrap up with a slow, unhurried feed under the stars of the Central Plateau — good kai, good chat. Capture the moment without a camera.

Writer's Round: Soaking it in

The Kinloch Golf Club

"For me, golf is pretty much the only time I genuinely get offline. No emails, no calls, no scrolling — just out there, playing.”

“I remember a round at Kinloch, where the evening light softened every fairway and suddenly nothing else mattered. I stopped keeping score halfway round, just hitting shots not counting strokes, talking about things that mattered, and soaking it all in. Golf is the closest I get to a proper offline moment in my screen based-career and I reckon it sticks with you long after the round ends."

Expert Tip: Play a Round, Together

The Kinloch Golf Club

Ditch the scorecard and try playing alternate shot format — or as they call it in the motherland, foursomes. One ball, two players, alternating shots. One tees off, the other plays the next and so on.

It’s stress-free, faster and makes every shot a team effort. If one player is stronger, they can take the tougher recoveries, letting both golfers contribute without pressure. It’s golf at its most fun — shared, strategic and without the usual grind. Couples, see if you can make some pars!

Where to Eat: Stay in the Moment

To keep the off-grid feel alive, opt for dining experiences that keep you out of the town centre and locked into your digital detox experience.

Self-contained accommodation and cooking for yourselves could be one option, or a quiet laid-back fishing lodge serving up great hospitality in a riverside setting. Then again, the Taupō hospitality scene offers plenty of clean-eating casual cafes, boutique burgers and beer and bijou fine dining locales with unpretentious exteriors.

Beyond the always popular — sometimes noisy — waterfront dining establishments, you’ll find plenty of quietly satisfying eating to fuel your weekend whatever your style.

Toggle to Flight Mode & Find Your Taupō Escape

Wairakei Golf + Sanctuary

This isn’t about removing technology — it’s about removing the distractions that pull you away from the experience. Whether you’re walking the fairways of Kinloch, or admiring the landscapes and wildlife, you’ll find that the best moments don’t need to be captured — they just need to be experienced. So go on, toggle your phone to Flight Mode and let Taupō take care of the rest.

A mountain bike journey through wild trails and quiet moments in Taupō.

A mountain bike journey through wild trails and quiet moments in Taupō.

Huka Trails

When life moves too fast, sometimes the best fix is to move faster — on two wheels, deep in the pines, chasing the flow. It’s not an escape. It’s a return … to movement, to your true rhythm. To that rare feeling of being exactly where you’re meant to be.

In Taupō, you’re not just riding trails — you’re riding the rim of an ancient supervolcano. The Supervolcanic Trail Network spans over 380 km of purpose-built tracks, carved through pumice-rich soil and dramatic terrain shaped by one of Earth’s largest eruptions. It’s fast-draining, flow-friendly and unlike anything else in the world.

This is your Taupō trail prescription — built for mountain bikers who need to clear their head and fill their lungs. Ride, reset, repeat.

How to get lost in the forest

Step into Craters MTB Park — or better yet, drop in. Built by locals and hugged by native bush, this network of hand-crafted trails gives you just enough to test your skills without ever feeling like a grind.

Whether you’re hunting airtime, chasing your mates, or just out for a flowy solo lap, there’s no better place to get out of your head and into your legs.

Ride trails with names as good as the lines — Grinder, Coaster, Tank Stand. You’ll sweat, you’ll laugh and maybe even let out a primal whoop. Phones stay toggled to flight mode. Hands stay gripped. Just you, the scroggin, and your two-wheeled waka.

Find your flow on Waihaha

For the long-haulers and scenery seekers, the Waihaha Section — made up of the Waihaha Link and Waihora Link on the Great Lake Trails — serves up a full-day ride with wide-open lake views, fern-filled gullies and just enough technical features to keep things spicy.

Start inland, ride out toward the lake and finish with a swim or just a stare at that wild edge-of-the-world view above The Great Lake. Bonus points for a shuttle ride back and a cold one waiting in the chilly bun (insert Kiwi accent).

The switchbacks, climbs, descends — and somewhere along the way, your inner voice quiets down. That’s the ride doing its thing. Flow state activated.

Writer’s ride: Notes from the trails

Great Lake Trails

“I headed to Taupō for a weekend thinking I’d tick a few boxes. Get a couple rides in, maybe squeeze in a soak in a hot pool somewhere. What I didn’t expect was the silence.”

“There’s this point on the Waihaha, somewhere near the bluff, where all I could hear was wind, water and the sound of my tyres rolling over dirt. My phone was buried in my bag, Friday’s emails would remain unread until another day. I was deep in the ride. It’s funny how one ride can reset your compass — not just for the weekend but for the weeks that followed.”

Insider Tip: Not every ride needs to be full gas. Try hitting a familiar trail at half speed and let the terrain do the talking. You’ll see new lines, smell the forest, and hear your tyres hum.

Home is where the bike rack is

Puketui Forest Escape

Keep the flow going after the ride. Taupō offers plenty of basecamp options from secluded cabins in the bush to MTB-friendly glamping setups with hot tubs and secure bike storage. Wake up with forest light spilling through canvas, coffee bubbling on the stove and nothing more to do than plan your next loop. No meetings, no emails — just dirt, dopamine and downtime.

Of course, not every trip needs to be off-grid. Taupō has plenty of down-to-earth stays that make a solid home base — think motels with room for the bikes, lakefront apartments with space for the crew and family-friendly spots close to the town centre. Whether you're rolling in solo, riding with mates or bringing the whole whānau, there’s something here for every squad and every budget. Ride all day, refuel nearby, repeat tomorrow.

Where the reset lingers

River Side Trail

This isn’t about digital detox for detox’s sake. It’s about riding yourself back to balance. The Taupō Supervolcanic Trail Network isn't just a playground — it’s a reset button. A reminder that sometimes the fastest way to slow down is on a bike.

So go on, chase the flow. You’ll come back lighter.
