1. Family-friendly boating

To keep the little ones safe and happy, you can't beat a boat cruise. The Ernest Kemp is a replica steamboat that glides peacefully over the lake, even when choppy. Plenty of indoor space and a raised rail guard around the deck so the kids can run around safely. Refreshments are available on board. The little ones will love feeding the ducks that fly up to the side of the boat and visiting the skipper to steer the wheel.

The natural geothermal pools in this area have long been recognised as having wai ora (healing waters). The kids are incredibly well catered to here with a thermally heated freshwater children’s pool, an interactive warm water playground with water pop-ups, streaming jets, and showers.

Tūrangi Turtle Pools

You will find the Turtle Pools located in the heart of Tūrangi, an easy 40-minute drive from Taupō town. A perfect way to entertain the kids on a cool weekend or warm up after exploring one of the local trails.

The complex is a fully enclosed facility with four heated pools, including a 25-metre lane pool, a deep bombing and aquarobics pool, a learner’s pool, and a toddler’s pool. The new aquatic climbing wall is a fun activity for kids. The wall stands 3.5 meters above the water and has climbing holds attached, where you can grip and climb up and down the wall before re-entering the pool below.

“I think the secret is out,” says resident Tina Jakes. “I’m seeing a lot more campervans and motorhomes here at the lake and most have bikes on the back.”

Decades after it should have been dismantled, Mangakino township continues to reinvent itself as a hub for outdoor enthusiasts.
The supposedly-temporary village on the edge of Lake Maraetai is luring mountain bikers, hikers, hunters, anglers, and wakeboarders who come in search of trails or trout, or a scenic spot to park for the night.

Fascinating History of Mangakino

Tina chairs Waikato River Trails Trust, which oversees a 103-km network of cycling and walking trails that pass through Mangakino, neighbouring Whakamaru and Atiamuri.

The former Taupo District Council staff member and councillor is a long-time advocate for her adopted town’s charms. She also helped a local group ensure some of its history was recorded on a series of interpretive signs around Mangakino and Whakamaru.

At one point, the now-serene lakeside community boasted New Zealand’s first shopping mall and the largest school in the southern hemisphere. The current settlement was established in the late 1940s, to house workers who built the hydroelectric power stations at Mangakino.

Mangakino’s Resilience.

“It was all meant to disappear when the dam finished, in the late 60s, but the town refused to give up. People liked it and they stayed on.”

Tina

Tina and her husband are among the subsequent stayers. The couple bought a small cottage as a holiday home in Mangakino in the mid-1980s and liked the place so much, they moved permanently.

He enjoyed the hunting – deer, ducks, pigs – and they both loved the quiet, as well as the opportunity to dangle a line over the side of their fishing boat to catch trout in Lake Maraetai. These days, they tend to cycle more, and she likes to run sections of the cycle trail, too. Most days, Tina walks the dog around Mangakino Golf Course, which borders the cycle trail.

Flat Water Haven.

Her father loved walking the golf course, too. He would take his own dog over the pleasantly undulating fairways that overlook the lake and are surrounded by established trees.

In fact, Tina’s parents enjoyed the place so much, they bought a holiday house near their daughter.

“My dad just loved the lake and even built himself a canoe. He had an interesting life in the army, police, then to Africa where he worked as a game warden, so I had lion cubs as pets when I was a girl.”

Tina was nine when her family left Kenya and emigrated to New Zealand. She had a government job and went on to serve in various local roles including community manager for Mangakino.

“This place is a real mecca for wake boarders, water skiers and rowers because the lake has a couple of arms so it’s very sheltered. Lots of rowing camps are held here because it’s good flat water.”

She is pleased to see a recently-renovated lodge cater to cyclists, alongside other accommodation providers.

Scenic trails.

“For me, I love this section of the trail from Mangakino to Whakamaru because it pretty much follows the river so you can ride next to it most of the way. There’s enough variation, enough flat and hard stuff, to run, ride or walk. Or, heading north, there’s a newer bit of trail that runs from just outside Mangakino to Maraetai dam. It’s not alongside the river quite as much but the trail flows beautifully, through native bush, a bit of pine, a bit of farmland.”

Tina says the trail is a catalyst that brings people into this area so they discover what’s on offer nearby.
“Of course, the lake is a huge drawcard but most people don’t know, for instance, that New Zealand’s biggest totara is a short drive. We’re so central; the geographic centre of the North Island is just a 20-minute drive, Taupō is 50km”.
“And everyone should see a Mangakino sunrise over the lake at least once in their life. I love waking up to that every day.”

Tina’s Tips for actively relaxing around Mangakino

1. Mangakino Golf Club and Frisbee Golf: The scenic and challenging Mangakino Golf Club is a must-visit, even for non-golfers. The 18-basket Frisbee Golf course is fun for the whole family.

2. Cool Off in the Lake: After a bike ride or hike along the Waikato River Trail, take a refreshing swim in Lake Maraetai or visit the Mangakino Community Pool, open December to February with free entry.

3. Enjoy a Scenic Run or Walk: Start at Mangakino lakefront and head north towards Maraetai Dam on a pleasant 4 km trail, shaded in summer.

4. Discover Local History: Explore the heritage trail displays in Mangakino and Whakamaru, featuring fascinating historical snippets and impressive views of the Maraetai power stations.

5. Coffee and Treats: Don’t miss the homemade chicken, bacon, and mushroom pie at Ata’s Café in Mangakino or a toasted sandwich at the Dam Café in Whakamaru. Enjoy stunning lake views at a scenic spot near Whakamaru Domain.

6. ‘Stairway to Heaven’: Hike the five flights of stairs along the Ongaroto Bluff on the Whakamaru to Atiamuri trail for breathtaking views of Lake Whakamaru and the peaks of Kaahu and Whakaahu.

“Walk?!” Smiling at her excitement, you grab the leash and head out on your walk together.

Past studies describe dog owners’ “vicarious pleasure (that) demonstrates how dog walking can produce a shared happiness.” A common thread between all dog parents is seeing their dog’s reaction when they ask the rhetorical question, “Do you wanna go for a walk?”

But we don’t need a study to understand why dogs are man’s best friend.

Dogs add so much to our daily lives with their unconditional love, infinite loyalty, and infectious joy.

Imagine how happy your pup is on the car ride to the Taupō region. Picture the stunning walks with changing leaves, serene lake views, and exciting new smells to sniff.

With these 5 autumn walking tracks in one of the most dog-friendly towns, you and your pup will both be excited to get out the door!

1. Rangatira Point Track

We mentioned the Rangatira Track in our story, but we didn’t showcase the best part!

This lakeside walk is a hidden gem for you and your fur friend.

For the energetic pups (anyone who has a collie or huskie), begin at the first carpark off Acacia Bay Road for a 1.5 km walk one-way. If your pet is a senior angel, there’s two other carparks with shorter walking distances.

Wander together through native bush with the lake right at their paws. For the dogs who can’t stay out of the water, this is heaven on earth with small beaches to swim in. Launch your paddleboard or kayak and voyage together to the Ngatoroirangi Mine Bay Māori Rock Carvings (a few minutes past Whakamoenga Point).

Once you get to the boat ramp, stroll an extra 30 minutes to Whakamoenga Point. The flat volcanic rocks formed for a day of enjoying the lake views and bounding from the rocks into Lake Taupō.

2. Opepe Scenic & Historic Reserve Walk

The Opepe Scenic & Historic Reserve Walk is a relatively flat loop just 10 minutes outside Taupō town. It may look like an ordinary walk through tōtara, miro, mataī and kahikatea forest.

But within the lush greenery are living pieces of the historic Opepe settlement.

Amble through a mature forest that survived centuries of storms and volcanic eruptions on the Northern Track (1.5 km). On the opposite side of SH5, the Southern loop (3km) contains remnants of rich history. Along the trail, your duo will discover pieces of the old settlement- tōtara fencing, a watering site, and a historic sawpit.

Or venture through both loops for a long morning walk then fuel back up for lunch at Replete Café & Store or any of the other dog-friendly cafes in Taupō town. For an après-hike adventure, blaze the bike trails with your trusty trail dog at Craters MTB Park or take an Ernest Kemp cruise with your best fur friend on board to the Ngatoroirangi Mine Bay Māori Rock Carvings.

3. Waipahihi Botanical Reserve

Spring is stunning.

But autumn at the gardens cannot be missed with its flourishing trees and colors, prime picnic spots, and the sweeping views of Lake Taupō, the mountains, and Taupō town below.

The 35 hectares of rata, flax, kauri, and hebe bring this autumn walk to life and are a favorite for local dog parents. You pass by other dog moms on walkways, themed with flowers and plants, offering an afternoon for you and your dog to get lost together in this oasis.

With lunch spots throughout the gardens with scenic views, you and your pup are spoilt for choice of picnic tables, open reserves and scenic views. Your picnic date is made easy with packed lunch options from Baked with Love or Bodyfuel Café.

Between the beautiful flora, the endless walking loops, and the panoramic views, we don’t know who will be happier!

4. Pukawa Bay Walks

If you haven’t gotten a chance to visit the south side of the lake, you’re missing out!

Get away from the hustle and bustle and venture to the secluded holiday havens of Omori and Pukawa.

The Pukuawa Bay Loop Track is a favorite for dog parents in the area. The short inclines are worth the glorious views eastward across Lake Taupō and the remote countryside. Under the cover of native rimu, mataī and tōtara trees is where you and your fur friend will treasure the cozy beginnings of autumn.

Your best walking buddy begging for more?

In Pukawa village, Pukawa to Omori Track begins through bush right along the lake’s edge. Your pup won't know where to inspect and sniff between the pond, Omori Reserve, and the beach.

Continue through the Omori Stream to Omori for a quick caffeine break for you and a water break for your fur friend, returning via the same track.

5. Oruatua Walk

Does your dog love the water?

If you’re close to the Turangi area, you won’t want to miss this lakeside hidden gem.

At the mouth of the Tauranga-Taupō River, an easy walking loop to explore the river, native bush reserves, and stunning Lake Taupō views, is waiting for his pawprints.

The track begins with native bush and forest overhead before opening up your dog’s dream of a beach, for them to play and just be the joyful dogs that they are.

It's the perfect mix of bush, wetland, and lakeside beach on this short walk for you and your best friend.

No public facilities
Parking Access (follow the unpaved road from Kapua Street to the lakeside clearing)

A small settlement on the shores of Lake Maraetai, Mangakino is a quiet little village that offers peace and tranquillity to all those who stop by. But there’s also plenty of adventures to be had, if you’re up for it. Nature is at the heart of most scenic attractions in Mangakino, and no matter the time of the year - you’ll always find beauty in your surroundings.

Timber Trail

The Timber Trail is one of the most popular activities that bring people to Mangakino. At 85km long, it’s a testing grade 3 trail, so is for those with a bit of mountain biking experience up their sleeve. And it’s certainly worth the journey.

Through ancestral Maori lands, you ride deep into the ancient Pureora Forest Park and while there are many highlights along the trail, crossing the longest suspension bridge on any cycleway - at 140 metres long - certainly takes out a top spot.

For very fit bike riders, it can be done in a single day, but if you want to take your time, there is a fully-serviced campground around the halfway point of the trail (and really adds an extra level of excitement to your experience).

Just note that due to there being no mobile coverage, it’s important to plan your trip before you go and make all necessary arrangements when it comes to transport and bookings.

Maraetai Dam

Constructed as part of the Waikato hydroelectricity generation power scheme in the 1940s and 1950s, there are two powerhouses located at the head of the Maraetai Dam - Maraetai I and Maraetai II - but they are operated as one power station.

When the dam was built, it created Lake Maraetai and at one time, it was the largest hydroelectric dam in the Southern Hemisphere. Today it’s still the largest hydroelectric station on the Waikato River and is pretty spectacular to witness up close.

Check out Maraetai I and Maraetai II from the viewing platforms, where you’ll be treated to amazing views of the two concrete structures carved into the rockface - you’re sure to be in awe of these extraordinary feats of engineering.

Whakamaru Dam

A five minute drive from Mangakino, make sure you pay a visit to the Whakamaru Dam where you can actually stand at the top of this magnificent structure and look down, way down!

It’s actually incredible to see the water almost level with you on the southern side, then drop so dramatically to continue on its journey north. And the rural outlook here is beautiful too.

Lake Maraetai
Much of Managkino’s scenic attractions centre around Lake Maraetai, where you can enjoy the water no matter whether you’re on it, or simply watching from the shore.

Take a walk alongside the lake, a section of the Maraetai Trail (that’s a part of the Waikato River Trails) and watch golfers on the golf course, or keep an eye out for rowing teams practising on the lake.

In the warmer months you might like to find the perfect picnic spot around the lake’s edge, or if you’re up for a few thrills, bring the boat for some water skiing or wakeboarding. In fact, Mangakino is a pretty popular spot when it comes to wakeboarding, with events like the Junior Wake Fest and the Wake NZ North Island Championships held here every year.

Please note: Two species of exotic freshwater clams have been found in the Waikato region. These clams are prolific breeders, able to produce 400 juveniles a day and up to 70,000 juveniles a year, allowing them to reach extremely high densities in optimal conditions. This means they can clog water-based infrastructure, such as electricity generation plants, irrigation systems, and water treatment plants. They also compete with native species for food and space.

Corbicula fluminea (also known as Golden Clams) have been confirmed in the Waikato River from Lake Maraetai Landing to Tuakau. This means that people must not knowingly move them or water that may contain them. To do so would be an offence under the Biosecurity Act.

People can still use the Waikato River for recreation, including boating and fishing, or gathering of kai (food) if they follow the requirements of the controlled area notices, including clam-specific Check Clean Dry procedures, before moving their equipment or craft.

Disc Golf Course

One of the coolest attractions in Mangakino is the disc golf course! What is that you ask? It’s the fun of frisbee combined with the challenge of golf - it’s disc golf. Free to play, you’d be silly not to give it a go when you’re visiting Mangakino, especially since it has an upgraded 18 basket course with two playing options.

And the good news is that even if you’re not a natural at disc golf, you still get to make the most of those beautiful lakeside views. So all in all, it makes for a fun morning or afternoon out!

The Waikato River Trails comprises five trails, with Mangakino the start or finishing point for those on the Waipapa section, and the start of the fourth trail, Maraetai. One of the biggest challenges is finding activities that are just as much fun for adults, as they are for kids - after all, it's your holiday too.

We have found a solution. Most people drive straight past Taupō - perhaps stopping to watch the sheer force on display at Huka Falls. But there is much more to this region if you just look a little closer.

The secret volcano valley

Thirty minutes outside Taupō is a geothermal wonderland most of us have never heard of - Orakei Korako. The area is known as The Hidden Valley, but don't let the remoteness fool you; this is one of the most active geothermal regions in the country.

When you first arrive, you need to board a boat to cross the Waikato River to reach the geothermal field. What greets you on the other side is the biggest silica terraces anywhere in the world - giving a glimpse into what the Pink and White Terraces would have once looked like.

From there, you follow a snaking boardwalk up through the valley, passing more than 20 geysers, hot springs and mud pools. There's even a rare geothermal cave to explore; one of only two known to exist in the world.

The park is continually exploding, gushing and bubbling. The Earth here is angry, and it's a privilege to be able to witness its constant tantrums.

Raging rapids

One of the best free attractions in Taupō puts on a show at 90,000 litres a second, several times a day.

The release of the Aratiatia Dam turns the gorge into a raging river within five minutes.

The Aratiatia Dam, just north of the city, is the closest most will ever come to witnessing a flash flood. After a series of loud warning sirens, the dam opens, and in a matter of minutes, a trickling stream down a narrow gorge becomes a raging torrent.

Price: Free. Water releases happen at 10am, 12pm, 2pm (plus 4pm in summer).

White water jet

Another great way to experience the Aratiatia Rapids is by jet boating to the base of them. The Rapid Jets trip is unlike any other in New Zealand; it's a little like white water rafting in a jet boat.

Rapids Jet offers the only white water jet boat trip in the country.

You get all the usual spins and close shaves you'd expect in a jet boat, as well as thundering through roaring white water, getting some serious air as you hurtle down the river.

Price: $75 for children, $129 per adult - with discounts for booking as a family. Suitable for children as young as five.

Interactive wonderland

If you or the kids are a fan of the hit TV show Lego Masters, you'll want to stop at Mind Junction. This adventure centre for kids has the largest permanent lego display in New Zealand - alongside lots of other activities like a giant outdoor maze, radio control boats and a fully functioning flight simulator.

Mind Junction is fun for young and old.

The Discovery Centre is a highlight - it's accessed by a pitch-black 'sensory tunnel' - then out you pop in a room full of experiments. Kids will learn about space, sound, light and Earth while playing with interactive displays.

Price: Mind Junction charges per activity, or purchase a VIP Pass for $35 - which gives access to most areas.

Heat up

Taupō DeBretts Hot Springs are designed for kids and adults alike. Children can spend the day at the hot water playground, or racing up and down the hydro-slides, while parents relax in the nearby thermal pools.

This popular complex can be crowded during holidays, but off-peak, it's a great place to unwind while the kids burn off their energy.

Price: Family day passes start from $79.

Geothermal safari

The best Segway trip in the country involves an off-road safari.

An off-road Segway safari ventures down a valley to a hidden geothermal stream.

After a quick training session, the specially designed Segways are ready to be unleashed on a course through the forest, that includes hills, dips, bumps and slopes. The tour even visits a hidden geothermal stream - wrapped in a mythical valley of steam.

Price: Tours with Pure Kiwi Adventures start from $75.

Waka in the sky

New Zealand's largest gondola has just opened at Whakapapa - on the slopes of Mount Ruapehu. The Sky Waka takes you 1.8 kilometres up into the clouds - passing frozen waterfalls, ancient lava flows, snow-covered valleys and ends the journey at the highest restaurant in New Zealand, overlooking the vast expanse of the Tongariro National Park. You can even see out to Mount Taranaki on a clear day.

Snow sledding is also a popular activity for kids that need an easy introduction to snow - adults can even race their children down, before getting on a specially-designed sled lift to return to the top of the course.

The lake's hidden gem

One of the country's most magnificent Māori Rock Carvings is tucked away on Lake Taupō - only accessible by boat.

In the 1970s, wearing just speedos and safety glasses, four artists marked out a giant artwork to create a permanent connection between the region's ancestors, and the land. It took four years of painstaking work to carve out the enormous face.

Today Chris Jolly Outdoors run regular sailings out to the carvings. While there, you'll also be greeted by ducks that'll swoop in - hover above you - and take bread from your hands.

Price: Family cruise packages start from $99 - kids even get a chance to drive the boat.

White-knuckle ride

Floating down the Tongariro River feels like a trip back to New Zealand before humans arrived. The river passes towering canyons, pumice cliffs, dense native bush and more than 60 rapids.

Tongariro River Rafting runs down Grade Three rapids - an adventure for all ages.

Tongariro River Rafting's main trip is on Grade Three rapids; this 14km journey is the perfect balance of adventure and scenery - with little chance of falling out.

A family-friendly option for younger kids includes a section of Grade Two rapids - where children as young as three can join. Winter rafters are kept warm with several super-cosy layers and a hot spring soak afterwards.

STAYING THERE Heritage Collection Anchorage Resort Taupō has modern family-friendly apartments overlooking the lake, with a large pool and hot tub. Prices start from $140 per night.

Turangi's Creel Lodge has chalet-style accommodation in a beautiful garden setting. It's close to Mt Ruapehu, the Tongariro River and in the heart of the country's best trout fishing. Prices start from $140.

GETTING THERE Taupō is an easy three hour drive from Auckland or two hours from Napier, Hamilton or Tauranga. It's five hours from Wellington. Air New Zealand has connections from Auckland, while Sounds Air runs a service from Wellington.

Riding the Great Lake Trails

Winding along the north-western shoreline of Lake Taupō you will find an epic mountain biking and walking adventure.

What began as a pipe dream for a crew of local trail builders has evolved into the Great Lake Trails, a 71km grade 3 (intermediate) mountain biking and walking journey that can be done over two to three days.

The trail is broken up into three key sections: Waihaha, Kawakawa and Whakaipo and is rideable all year round due to the region's unique free draining volcanic pumice soil. The Great Lake Trail is part of the Nga Haerenga - The New Zealand Cycle Trails network.

Where to stay

For the best experience, you can base yourself in Kinloch, a picturesque village set on a quiet bay right at the top of Lake Taupō, and ride in a west-to-east direction starting at Waihaha, ending at W2K.

Kinloch is just 20 minutes northwest of Taupō town and makes for simple logistics with various Airbnb options or a handful of bike-friendly commercial B&Bs nearby. Coordinating logistics is easy from here, with several shuttles and guides operating out of Kinloch. By mountain bike or foot, the bush-clad trail offers excellent nature-watching, including native birds and even the odd wild pig or deer. Here we have highlighted the Great Lake Trails over three days on bike, basing yourself in Kinloch.

Day one - Waihaha Section

The Waihaha section (30km) is the most remote, so be prepared for an early start. It’s 40 minutes’ drive or shuttle from Kinloch and is the longest of the three sections.

The ride starts from the Waihaha River Bridge and has been built with flowing corners, fun downhills, and some short switchback climbs to keep you honest, but your efforts will be rewarded with postcard-worthy lookouts along the way. Towering volcanic rock cliffs, spectacular views and a waterfall hidden deep in the Waihaha Valley are among some of the highlights on this section of the trail.

The final part of the ride drops you down past the sacred Kotukutuku Falls to the remote aquamarine waters of Waihora beach. This is the perfect spot for a swim as you wait for your water taxi to pick you up. It is important to plan ahead as the remote nature of this section requires both a shuttle to the start, and a water taxi from Waihora Bay back to Kinloch.

Pack plenty of food and water, and take your time to enjoy all the stunning sights and sounds along the way. Be sure to stop at Echo Rock, where you could be tricked into thinking you’re underneath a waterfall.

Day two - Kawakawa section and Whakaipo Section

Start day two with a shuttle out to the start of the 19.5km Kawakawa section, just a short 20-minute journey from Kinloch. The first 10km of the trail is a nice gradual downhill that takes you through stunning native wetlands before dropping you into the secluded Kawakawa Bay.

This is a great place to stop for morning tea or lunch, and during summer is the perfect place for a swim. You can also camp here. For those who would prefer an easy ride (10.25km), you can book Venture Beyond - powered by Taxicat back to Kinloch from Kawakawa Bay.

If you’re keen to carry on, a 3km climb up onto the Te Kauwae headland is rewarded with sweeping views of the lake and western bays before you begin the fast-flowing descent to Kinloch.

The Whakaipo section (21km) starts from Kinloch and loops over the eastern peninsula of Whangamata Bay and into Whakaipo Bay. Again, this section has two distance options.

The simple loop is a gentle grade 2-3, 13km in length, with a few scenic stops along the route. The headland loop adds on an additional 9.5km and is a little more physical than the main route. The ducking and diving through the trees as the trail twists lengthens the route, but you will find yourself out on the edge of the peninsula with stunning vistas over Lake Taupō.

Before setting out, be sure to organise your transport back to Kinloch from Whakaipo Bay. There is road access into the bay, so dropping a vehicle, there is an option or book a shuttle to pick you up. The other option is booking a water taxi to collect you off the shores of the bay and jet you back around to Kinloch.

All sections of the Great Lake Trail are ridable in both directions, so you can choose to tackle them however you choose. Shuttle services and tour operators are available to provide transport links, guiding services and package tours.

Enjoy unhurried adventures across the Taupō region this summer by slowing down the pace on these 10 walking trails through rainforests, past rare rain-fed lagoons and alongside thundering rapids and emerald-coloured whirlpools.

Summer in Taupō is a must-experience season. Trails crisscrossing the region range from short five-minute walks to longer hikes and lake-side strolls where ice cream and coffee shops are never far away.

Then, after a day of exploring, enjoy balmy evenings with twilight swims and laid-back picnics on the sandy shoreline of Lake Taupō. Or embark on a culinary journey through the town's lively dining scene before setting sail on an evening cruise across the trout-filled caldera. Finally, pamper weary legs with a soothing soak at Otumeheke Stream or wallow in the mineral-rich waters of Taupō DeBretts Spa Resort and Wairakei Terraces.

1. Aratiatia Rapids | SH5 Rotokawa

Stand in awe as millions of litres of water erupt from Aratiatia Dam, surging into a narrow rocky gorge and filling it with frothy, turbulent water in an impressive display of nature’s power. Watch the action unfold from the bridge or walk downstream to two lookouts offering prime vantage points to feel the misty spray as the gorge fills – there’s time to watch the dam gates open and quickly walk to the first lookout. Allow 30 minutes. Dogs on leads.

2. Great Lake Pathway (Lion’s Walk) | Lake Taupō Marina

For a more leisurely outing, this pathway begins at the marina, where a brief detour to Kona Kones or Luna’s Gelateria will perk the kids up before heading south along the lakeshore. Grab a coffee from The Steaming Bean or Espresso Cove before making Two Mile Bay Sailing Club the turnaround point after wood-fired pizzas and watching the kids splash about on floating inflatables. Bring the togs for sunset swims in the shallow swimming bays. Dogs on leads.

3. Whangamata Stream Trail | Kinloch

After its peaceful winter slumber, Kinloch awakens into a bustling community of locals and visitors, mountain bikers emerging from the surrounding bush-clad hills and families sprawled on the sandy shoreline of Lake Taupō.

And, tucked behind the beach on the edge of town is an excellent family-friendly adventure along wide pathways to a fairy glade and through native and exotic tree stands beside the trout-spawning Whangamata Stream. Walk, bike or bring the buggies on this 60-minute adventure.

4. Spa Thermal Park to Huka Falls Walk | Taupō

For all the summer vibes, this stroll is a must-do when visiting Taupō. The pretty riverside pathway meanders alongside the Waikato River, peppered with small bush-clad islands, to where a volcanic bottleneck blasts nearly a quarter of a million litres of sparkling blue water every second along a series of small waterfalls before a final 11-metre-high plunge into swirling whirlpools.

Multiple lookouts beside the rock chasm let you eyeball all the action. Allow about 45 minutes one way. Walking only. Dogs on leads.

5. Whakamoenga Point | Rangatira Point Track

If you can tear yourself away from the picture-perfect swimming beaches of Acacia Bay, the Rangatira Point Track is just a little further away. The shady trail leads to Whakamoenga Point, with its flat volcanic rocks jutting into the lake with a backdrop of Tongariro National Park on the horizon. This dramatic geological formation provides a launching pad for manu bombs, sedate picnics and also tempts anglers to dangle a line, hopeful of snaring a wily trout. Allow 30 minutes one way. Walking only. Dogs on leads.

6. Lake Rotopounamu | SH47 Te Ponanga Saddle

Bring the togs and snacks to laze away an afternoon on the shoreline of this emerald-coloured lake nestled in an ancient crater on Pīhanga. A walking trail climbs steadily to the rippling lake before settling into a leisurely wander around its shoreline, lined with translucent kidney ferns. Long Beach sweeps around the far side of the lake and is ideal for picnicking and swimming. For a shorter adventure, visit Five Minute Beach or Ten Minute Beach. Walking only. No dogs.

7. Mount Tauhara | Taupō

The summit of Mount Tauhara offers some of the region’s best views across the volcanic-shaped landscape, but it’s not without a little heart-pumping action to get you there. But this doesn’t stop a steady stream of locals and tourists navigating the mountain before the final push to the trig at 1,088 metres above sea level. Locals’ tip: keep following the path to perch on exposed rocky outcrops for the best views. Time your ascent as the sun sinks and paints the Central Plateau in peachy hues. Allow two to three hours return. Walking only. No dogs.

8. Ōpepe Northern Loop | SH5 Napier Taupō Highway

There are plenty of enormous trees to peer at, clamber over and even ones with dark holes through the trunks to climb through - if the kids are brave enough. This 40-minute-long adventure is close to town and provides a shady escape from hot summer days. The well-graded trail passes through a mature podocarp forest with wizened trees that survived extensive fires and logging.

9. Taranaki Falls | Whakapapa Village

Follow ancient lava flows through dramatic barren landscapes to a snow-fed river tumbling 20 metres into a rocky valley before returning to the village through an alpine beech forest. And if two hours to complete the loop is a stretch for some family members, don’t miss the 15-minute long buggy- and wheelchair-friendly Whakapapa Nature Walk in the village with its stunning beech forest and mighty little plants that thrive on the side of the volcano. Allow two hours for the waterfall. Walking only. No dogs.

10. Pureora Forest Park | Pureora

Take a day trip to this ancient rainforest on the western side of Lake Taupō to visit a seriously ‘kink in the neck’ high forest giant, the largest record tōtara with a whopping circumference of nearly 12 metres on the Pouākani Tōtara Tree Walk off SH30. Or, clamber up a 12-metre tower within kōkako country on the Forest Tower Track off Bismarck Road. The 20-minute buggy-friendly Tōtara Walk from the Timber Trail car park provides a whistlestop tour of a towering forest remnant.

And imagine how primeval New Zealand would have looked on a 15-minute stroll to Waihora Lagoon, where after heavy rain, the lagoon overflows into the surrounding swamp forest dominated by towering rimu and kahikatea - 4WD required for the lagoon access road.
