Itinerary sections (Left · Right)

Day 1 - Friday

Start at the Huka Falls lookout, a short walk from the car park, before the tour buses arrive. Then see the falls from the water: Huka Falls River Cruise runs up the Waikato to the base of the falls every hour or so from Aratiatia. Back on land, the Craters of the Moon loop is 45 minutes of steaming craters above the Wairakei geothermal field.

Spend the afternoon in town: Absolute Space can fill it if the weather turns. Wind down with Community Yoga Classes before dinner on the lakefront. Every stop with a page of its own is pinned on the map.

Day 2 - Saturday

Ride the Great Lake Trail. Book a trailhead drop-off with Adventure Shuttles, who run the W2K and Waihaha sections daily from town, or let Central NZ Guiding plan a guided day if you would rather follow a local than a map. Pack a swimsuit — the trail drops to the lake more than once.

Back in Taupō by mid-afternoon, swap pedals for a jet boat with Rapids Jet — 35 minutes of white water up to the Aratiatia Rapids. Then head south for the night: Tongariro Adventures will collect you if the legs have had enough, and Turangi Bridge Motel puts you on the banks of the Tongariro River with a restaurant and bar on site.
